Woman with face covered outside in the wintertime

Winter months can be difficult on your eyes. One major problem during the winter is dry eyes. When winter is drying your eyes out, artificial tears can help provide temporary relief, but frequent artificial tear use may not be the best solution. Consider other options to combat dry eyes this winter.

Georgia Center for Sight likes to take a different approach to dry eyes than recommending the incessant use of artificial tears. Dry eyes are caused by the slowing of the tear production system. To combat this issue, Dr. Dong uses an advanced technique and assists in slowing or stopping the tear drainage in your eyes. By using this technique, your eyes can use your natural tears to provide a tear film once again, which in turn makes your eyes less dry.

Dr. Dong inserts microscopic dissolving plugs into your tear drains. These plugs dissolve in a short amount of time, which allows patients to judge if the permanent plugs are worth it. If the dry eye symptoms improve and the patient wants to proceed, permanent plugs are placed into the eyes.

This procedure has helped relieve many patients of their dry eyes. This procedure takes less than 5 minutes and patients can return to normal activities immediately after the procedure. This means you can get dry eye relief and get back to participating in fun winter activities.

One factor that can cause dry eyes in the winter is sitting too close to your heat source. You can still keep your heat going to stay warm, but if you’re suffering from dry eyes try to sit further away from heat sources like fireplaces and electric heaters. Take this step to keep from further drying out your eyes.
