Meet the Revolutionary Light Adjustable Lens

See Life Clearly, Your Way:
The First an Only Lens That Can Be Tailored to Your Unique Vision Needs After Cataract Surgery

What is The Light Adjustable Lens?

The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is an advanced intraocular lens that can be used to replace your natural lens during cataract surgery. Unlike traditional intraocular lenses (IOLs) that have a pre-determined power before and after implantation, the Light Adjustable Lens is made from a special photosensitive material that can be precisely modified after the procedure using non-invasive light treatments.

When cataracts develop, the natural lens in your eye becomes cloudy, causing blurred vision, glare, and reduced visual quality. During cataract surgery, this cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens.

How Does The

Light Adjustable Lens Function?

With traditional IOLs, surgeons must predict the exact lens power needed before the procedure. The Light Adjustable Lens revolutionizes this approach.

After your eye has healed from the initial cataract surgery, your cataract surgeon at Georgia Center for Sight can precisely adjust the power of your implanted lens using controlled light treatments. This allows for customization based on your actual visual results rather than predictions, allowing fine-tuning for clear distance, intermediate, or near vision according to your lifestyle and preferences.

At Georgia Center for Sight, we’re proud to offer this innovative technology as part of our commitment to providing our patients with the most advanced vision correction options available.

Steps to Better Vision With the Light Adjustable Lens

Consultation and Evaluation

Your journey to clearer vision begins with a comprehensive eye examination at Georgia Center for Sight. During this initial consultation, our specialists will perform a detailed assessment of your eye health, discuss your visual goals and lifestyle needs, and determine if you might be a good candidate for the Light Adjustable Lens.

Our team will take the time to explain the Light Adjustable Lens procedure and what you can expect during and after surgery. We believe in informed decision-making and will ensure you have all the information needed to choose the best option for your vision needs.

Cataract Surgery

The cataract surgery procedure with the Light Adjustable Lens is similar to traditional cataract surgery but with the advantage of implanting this special adjustable lens. The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis and takes about 15-20 minutes per eye.

After removing your natural lens, the Light Adjustable Lens will then be carefully positioned in the same location. The incision is so small that it usually heals without stitches.

At Georgia Center for Sight, our surgeons use state-of-the-art technology and techniques to ensure precision and safety throughout your procedure.

Healing

After cataract surgery, your eye needs time to heal before any adjustments can be made to the lens. This healing period typically lasts 2-3 weeks.

During this time, you’ll need to wear special UV-blocking glasses whenever you’re awake, even indoors, to protect your new lens from exposure to light that could cause unwanted changes. Our team will monitor your healing progress closely with follow-up appointments and provide detailed instructions on how to care for your eye during recovery.

Most patients experience improved vision shortly after surgery, but the real advantage of the Light Adjustable Lens comes with the customization that follows.

Light Treatment Sessions

Once your eye has adequately healed, the customization process begins. Based on your visual needs and the results of detailed measurements taken during follow-up examinations, your doctor will use the Light Delivery Device to apply non-invasive light treatments to your implanted lens.

These painless treatments last just a few minutes and work by changing the shape of the lens to adjust its power. The special photosensitive material in the Light Adjustable Lens responds to the specific patterns of light directed by your doctor, allowing for precise corrections to your vision.

Most patients require 2-3 light treatment sessions, spaced approximately 3-5 days apart, to achieve their desired visual outcome. Throughout this process, you’ll continue to wear your UV-blocking glasses between treatments to prevent unwanted changes to the lens.

Lock In Treatment

After achieving your desired vision correction, a final light treatment is performed to “lock in” the adjustments. This treatment ensures that your lens maintains its customized shape permanently, providing you with stable, long-term vision improvement.

The lock-in procedure is similar to the adjustment treatments—quick, painless, and performed in our office.

Enhanced Visual Freedom

What makes the Light Adjustable Lens different is the chance to “test drive” your vision between adjustments and tell your doctor what works best for you. This team approach leads to higher satisfaction and vision that’s truly customized to improve your daily life.

At Georgia Center for Sight, we love sharing in our patients’ joy as they rediscover clear vision and rely less on glasses or contacts.

Who is a Candidate for the Light Adjustable Lens?

The Light Adjustable Lens is an excellent option for many people, especially those who desire greater control over their vision outcome and are willing to comply with the post-operative treatment schedule and UV protection requirements.

Ideal candidates are those who have active lifestyles and want to reduce their dependence on glasses and patients with astigmatism who would benefit from the precise correction that can be achieved with the LAL. However, the Light Adjustable Lens may not be the best IOL option for everyone.

Patients with certain eye conditions such as uncontrolled glaucoma or irregular corneal conditions may not be ideal candidates. Also, individuals who cannot commit to the required post-operative appointments or who cannot wear UV-blocking glasses as directed should consider alternative options.

During your consultation at Georgia Center for Sight, our specialists will perform a thorough evaluation to determine if the Light Adjustable Lens is right for you. We consider factors such as your overall eye health, visual needs, lifestyle requirements, and medical history to recommend the most appropriate treatment plan.
