Cataract Awareness Month: When Should you Consider Cataract Surgery?
Posted by: Georgia Center for Sight
June is Cataracts Awareness Month! Did you know that cataracts are the leading cause of poor vision and vision loss in adults over 40?
What is a cataract?
A cataract is a clouding of the lens in an eye, which occurs when proteins in the lens clump together. They tend to affect 1 in 6 Americans over the age of 40 and over half of Americans by 70. A cataract can be caused by smoking, sun exposure to eye, family history, steroids, and obesity, and they can be detected and diagnosed during a comprehensive eye exam.
Symptoms include:
-
Blurred or double vision
-
Dull colors
-
Glare around lights or a sudden feeling of film covering the eyes
-
Frequent need to change glasses/difficulty reading
Cataracts can not be treated with a simple medication, they must be surgically removed. On the bright side, this is one of the safest and most common surgeries in the United States. Throughout the laser cataract surgery, the lens is removed and replaced with an artificial prescription lens called an intraocular lens. After the surgery, most patients experience 20/20 vision.
Here at Georgia Center for Sight, cataract surgery is performed by Dr. Dong using a no needle, no stitch procedure. Cataract surgery recovery is often very quick and heals within a few days, and your sight may tend to gradually improve over the following weeks after the cataract surgery. Normal activities such as driving and work can be resumed 2 to 3 days after your laser cataract surgery.
