New Years Resolution 2021

Time to say goodbye to 2020 and make our way into 2021. We’re all hoping this year will be better than the last, and many of us are making resolutions to start the year off right. Your health and wellness should be one of your top priorities, and a resolution is an excellent way to get started on a healthy goal. Here at the Georgia Center for Sight, we care about keeping your eyesight healthy. That’s why we’ve come up with a list of four simple things you can do to accomplish your resolution of caring for your vision and maintaining your eyes’ health.

  1. Schedule an Eye Exam – It’s essential to stay up-to-date with your eye exams to ensure that no new conditions are developing. It’s also a good idea to check your prescription on an annual basis to see if your vision has changed over time. Check out our website to schedule an eye exam with us, or contact us to book an appointment. Make sure to be prepared for your eye exam with any questions you may want to ask your optometrist.

  2. Follow a Healthy Diet – A healthy diet is the first step to maintaining your eyesight as you get older. Lacking specific vitamins and minerals in your diet can put you more at risk for developing conditions that may affect your vision. Foods rich in vitamins A, C, E, and omega-3 are good for maintaining your eyes’ health. Some of these foods include red bell pepper, salmon, leafy greens, nuts, sweet potatoes, and carrots. It’s also a good idea to quit smoking and reduce your alcohol intake, as these habits can put you at risk of developing eye diseases such as cataracts.

  3. Take the Proper Precautions You care for yourself in many ways daily: you brush your teeth twice a day, wash your face, shower, etc. Why should your vision be treated any differently? You can care for your eyes in small ways daily by taking the proper precautions. Wearing sunglasses with UV protection outside can protect your eyes from sunlight. You should avoid looking directly at bright lights and always keep your eyes away from the sun. We also suggest that you try and decrease your time spent looking at screens. The blue light emitted from the screens we look at causes strain and is harmful to our eyes. You can purchase blue light glasses that will help protect your eyes from your screens. Take care of your vision aids (such as your contacts and glasses) by keeping them clean and stored safely away from any substances that could hurt your eyes, and wear these vision aids as your doctor directs.

  4. Get Informed – Dive into some reading and do a little research to understand the causes and symptoms of different eye diseases. Ask your doctor for any informational pamphlets or brochures that might provide you with advice on caring for your eyesight. Knowing this information and monitoring any changes in your eyesight will help you keep tabs on your vision. You should also be aware of your family history of vision problems, as conditions such as Glaucoma can be hereditary. Being aware of your genetic predispositions can help you and your doctor develop a prevention plan.

Prevention is much easier than treatment, so we suggest keeping an eye on your health this year by following these simple guidelines. If you would like to schedule an appointment or book your annual eye exam with the Georgia Center for Sight, see our website or contact us directly.
